All

 

Last spring a fox took our dame and her duckling. Since then Lord
Hisalot; Musckovy drake, husband and father to the dearly departed, has
been alone among the fowl of the coop. Now he is becoming more chicken
like each day.

 

My five year old, Elliot, feels very sorry for Lord Hisalot. The other
day he was singing to him, trying to cheer him up.

 

Then between Christmas and New Year our rooster had an unfortunate
accident (broken neck) and Elliot and I buried him in the shelter belt.

Now Elliot feels doubly sad for Lord Hisalot because he does not have
another boy to play with.

 

So, against my better judgement, I am looking for both a rooster and
some female ducks (preferably musckovy) or indeed a pair of geese.

I will collect and even pay to get them. I am also happy to consider
swapping something, after all I have a shed full of junk stuff.

Hi Max,
The fox around here is very partial to duck, my silly pair insisted on staying on next doors dam even though I told them constantly that the fox would get them. Needless to say, quacky, the female, complained very loudly when hubby was taken. Since then Quacky has been confined to the choock pen and is now in love, to no avail, with my handsome rooster, Kevin, he tries!!!! Now Quacky is not a muscovy, she is Peking x Indian runner, white. She has hatched out a clutch of hen eggs but found that the chicks didn't swim too well. Anyway you would be welcome to have her for swap with a hen and if my one remaining chick turns out to be a rooster you can have him too.

I have approximately 100 second hand wooden fence palings, still attatched 
to the railings.  They are in good condition and free if you come and get 
them.

I also have 6 sheets of second hand corrigated iron in very good 
condition... please come and take them away!!!

the end of the  week if I don't hear from anyone.

  The fox around here is very partial to duck, my silly pair insisted on staying on next doors dam even though I told them constantly that the fox would get them. Needless to say, quacky, the female, complained very loudly when hubby was taken. Since then Quacky has been confined to the choock pen and is now in love, to no avail, with my handsome rooster, Kevin, he tries!!!! Now Quacky is not a muscovy, she is Peking x Indian runner, white. She has hatched out a clutch of hen eggs but found that the chicks didn't swim too well. Anyway you would be welcome to have her for swap with a hen and if my one remaining chick turns out to be a rooster you can have him too.

    Last spring a fox took our dame and her duckling. Since then Lord Hisalot; Musckovy drake, husband and father to the dearly departed, has been alone among the fowl of the coop. Now he is becoming more chicken like each day.

     

    My five year old, Elliot, feels very sorry for Lord Hisalot. The other day he was singing to him, trying to cheer him up.

     

    Then between Christmas and New Year our rooster had an unfortunate accident (broken neck) and Elliot and I buried him in the shelter belt.

    Now Elliot feels doubly sad for Lord Hisalot because he does not have another boy to play with.

     

    So, against my better judgement, I am looking for both a rooster and some female ducks (preferably musckovy) or indeed a pair of geese.

    I will collect and even pay to get them. I am also happy to consider swapping something, after all I have a shed full of junk stuff.

option 2 sounds good - the paying each year is always a logistical  
(rather than financial) challenge. I like the stuff about trading at  
least a little bit to keep one's membership current too.

International Seed Swap Day

January 31, 2009 is International Seed Swap Day of Action. SCPA's Bega 
Valley Seed Savers is hosting a seed swap in Ayres Walkway, Bega on 
Saturday morning. Around the world other seed saver groups and 
individuals are also holding seed swap events.

In the USA, Food Not Lawns, the White House Organic Farm project, Eat
the View, and other organizations are urging Obama's new Administration 
to support and encourage local food networks, permaculture, and
sustainability. In Australia groups both locally and around the nation
are using the event to strengthen the food security and ecological 
viability of our communities.

A community seed swap is an fun and rewarding way to meet new people and
expand the cultural and genetic diversity of our food. It could be
described as something like a gardeners? flea market with an emphasis on
seeds, plants and propagative material. The Bega Valley Seed Savers are
offering to swap seeds with anyone that saves their own seed from their
garden. Plants and cuttings are also welcomed for swapping. The emphasis 
is on useful plants for food or other household purposes.

Even if you don't currently save your own seeds, you are invited to
visit the seed savers display and take part in some seed cleaning and
winnowing.

It is a great opportunity to talk to local seed savers and learn how to
save some of your own seed.

If we each saved just one type of seed from our gardens and then
participated in seed swaps we'd all have enough seed for our vegetable
gardens.

Nethercote Seasonal Produce Market

The first Nethercote Seasonal Produce Market will be help on Saturday,
January 31st 2009, between 8am and noon.

Small and large local food producers will be selling everything from
fruit, veg, cakes to plants and chooks in the renovated historic
Nethercote Community Hall.

At 10am, local chef and farmer, Brian Aherne will be demonstrating how
to cook tapas from local produce.

The residents association will be selling excellent coffee and bacon and
egg rolls.

We are catering for the Dzogchen retreat (near tilba) of 150+ people for a week starting on the 9th feb and are working towards using local produce as much as possible.

Dear LETS folk,

Last year we wrote to you asking for donations to the Not for Profit  
Rental Housing aspect of BEND (Bega Eco Neighbourhood Developers Inc).
We would like to thank very much the people who responded to our  
request.

This email is to update you on the progress of the development and to  
ask again for donations.

You may be aware that recently we have had some exciting news!
Firstly Bega Valley Shire Council granted the Subdivision Certificate  
for the entire development and then two weeks later we found out that  
our application, in partnership with Community Housing Ltd (CHL), for  
grants from the NSW Centre for Affordable Housing and the National  
Rental Affordability Scheme has been successful!

As part of the grant application BEND agreed to raise at least 15% of  
the $2.5 million estimated to build 10 homes on 5 of the lots. So far  
we have been pledged over $111,000, so we require a further $270,000  
to reach BEND?s $382,500 target.

The more equity BEND can provide the more ownership stake the Bega  
Eco Housing Co op, which will jointly manage the houses along with  
CHL, will have in the homes.

This equity can take the form of cash, sapphs or long term loans.

So please consider making a donation. BEND is fast becoming a model  
for sustainable development, not just in the Bega Valley but  
nationally and globally. We cannot emphasize enough the difference  
your contribution will make.

Email Pete Wild (contact details below) if you would like to donate  
Sapphs and he will deduct the amount you have indicated from your  
LETS account. Pete will also answer any questions from those of you  
who may like to lend to the project.

Tax deductible cash donations can be made by posting a cheque to BEND  
Housing Fund, PO Box 715, Bega 2550 or online at www.bend.org.au or  
by depositing into the BEND Housing Fund at any NAB branch BSB:  
082-439 NAB Account No: 81-082-3199. Please provide your contact  
details if you require a receipt.

Meanwhile if you are interested in becoming a tenant in the new Bega  
Eco Housing Co-operative please contact Pete Wild. All tenants will  
need to be enthusiastic about the ecological aspects of living in the  
Bend neighbourhood and about the opportunity to participate in the  
management of the neighbourhood and the tenants co-operative. Most  
tenants will need to be eligible for public housing.

Hi Rob,

Still thinking and planning how to make a cob oven on wheels, that was something you wanted at Spicey Mammas. It can be done!

We don't have any surplus food, though we do have access to the native Mountain Pepper (Tasmaniea lancolata? bush (NB :spelling maybe incorrect there) which grows wild (organic??) around Brown Mt, the seeds are pepper sized but have a hotter and longer lasting pepper taste than the normal pepper spice, the leaves can also be used in cooking imparting a milder pepper flavour if used sparingly. If interested I can send down some previously picked and dried.

We (myself and two of the older lads) are thinking of doing some fruit picking this summer/autunm. Do you have any advice/contacts on this plan??
