Over the next few months two research projects will be undertaken about learning communities and the Shire. 1. In November Janice Biggin will be off to the USA to look at learning communities. Janice's itinerary is attached to give you some idea what projects she will be researching. 2. The Bega Education Centre through Wollongong University is about to advertise a summer research project for a current second or third year Student from the centre to look at Learning Centres in Australia. This research project will take place from mid November, January and February I have attached the project brief for your information. As you will see both research projects will compliment each other and provide us with a wealth of information and ideas as a basis for discussion and action by March next year. if you want to comment on any of this respond to LearningCommunities@thebegavalley.com ?? Many of you will know that the Draft Bega Valley Shire Council Social Plan is now available and you can view it at www.begavalley.nsw.gov.au Pages 45 and 46 cover Learning and Education and the following strategies are recommended Recommended Strategies: 1. Strengthen the Bega Valley Library Service, developing information resources for mandatory social planning target groups, gay men and lesbians and on health issues. 2. Facilitate lifelong learning in the Bega Valley Shire. 3. Develop Bega Valley Shire Council as a learning organisation. We would like some feed back on them. Are they OK ? Are they strong enough? To my mind it is the key strategy and deserves better articulation at the very least as to 'what'. How, when, who and where can then be driven by that strategy. You invited comment on the proposed inclusions in the Social Plan. While the recommended strategies are useful, it is desirable to recognise the learning community initiative more explicitly in the social plan. This could be done by adding words to (2), possibly along the following lines (2) Facilitate lifelong learning in the Bega Valley Shire and support the development of learning communities in towns and villages across the Shire. The other area that might be considered in the light of the role of Begavalley.com is harnessing ICT to extend learning opportunities in the Shire. A strategy perhaps along the following lines might be considered. (4) Promote digital literacy in the Shire and encourage and support the development of online learning communities across the Shire. I understand that someone is coming up for the ALA workshop in Canberra on 24 November on e-learning Creative Community Partnerships. I hope this happens as the workshop will be very relevant to my suggestion for (4) above. Could someone let me know who is coming please. I also hope to arrange a short workshop discussion for the Gunnedah/Bega Valley/Thuringowa participants at 3.30-5.00pm following the e-learning workshop.
